Since water is such a ready solvent, it contains many foreign materials. In passing through the air and in flowing through the ground, it dissolves many substances. Some of these substances are harmless, while some contain disease bacteria and are very dangerous. Well water is frequently contaminated. It is often not safe to use for drinking purposes unless boiled.
The discovery that provision of safe drinking water could prevent infectious diseases led to government regulations of drinking water quality in many countries. Today, the importance of safe drinking water has expanded beyond the prevention of infectious disease to the removal of chemical pollutants.
More recently, water has become increasingly viewed as an essential nutrient that has a role in overall bodily system functioning and in the prevention of chronic conditions and diseases common in the 21st century (e.g., obesity, cardiac disease, urinary infections, constipation, etc).
