The key to easy cooking with kids is preparation and practice. After a number of cooking practice lessons have developed in the children a certain ability and self-confidence in working, more formal cooking lessons may be introduced.
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 tablespoon cold butter
1/2 cup milk
1 tablespoon softened butter, for greasing pan
1. Grease baking pan with butter; set aside.
2. Sift flour, salt and baking powder; set aside.
3. Chop cold butter into small pieces with a knife and add to the sifted flour. Using pastry blender or fork, mix butter and flour until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add milk and form a soft dough.
4. Preheat oven to 400º F (205º C).
5. Place dough on a board with a little flour and knead gently until smooth. Roll out to 1/2-inch thickness.
6. Use small cutter, cut biscuits and place them in greased pan.
7. Bake in a preheated oven for about 10 minutes or until nicely browned.
8. Cool on wire rack for couple minutes and serve warm.
HELPFUL TIPS:
In connection with a recipe, the children should be taught to look for three parts:
1. The name.
2. The list and amount of ingredients.
3. The method.
In carrying out a recipe, they should, from the first, be taught to work in the following systematic order:
1. To collect the necessary utensils.
2. To collect the necessary ingredients.
3. To obey the method.
